My buddy Maura Campbell just emailed me an update on the idea of St. Louis getting our own Fisher House, that means families of soldiers being treated at the VA will have their own safe haven instead the cost of a hotel or staying with family and friends. This is huge!
Here’s the update!
Fisher House construction started on May 11th. Currently the VA’s contractor is clearing the site. When the VA’s work is done and the site is cleared, then the Fisher House Contractor will move on site and fence off the work area to begin work. The first step will be the excavation and foundation work which will be performed by a local sub-contractor. Once this happens, construction of the building begins. Plans are to open the Fisher House in mid-summer of next year.
A manager for the Fisher House has been hired. Her name is Rachael Fernandez. She graduated from SLU in 2008 with a master’s degree in Hospital Care Administration. Over the next several months, she will attend training at another VA Fisher House, develop policies and procedures, and recruit volunteers.
The estimate for the cost to construct and furnish this Fisher House is about $5 million. The national Fisher House Foundation will pay for half of the cost and asks us to raise the other half or $ 2 1/2 million. Presently we are at about 70% of our goal and still need to raise another $700,000. The good news is that the FH Foundation has agreed to put their money upfront so we can get started with the construction. When construction is complete and the house is fully furnished, then the national Fisher House Foundation will “donate” the house and all of the furnishings to the VA. From that point forward, the VA will operate the house and provide: a full-time facility manager, utilities, maintenance and housekeeping crews and a host of volunteers to make the residents stays as comfortable as possible.
