Belleville News Democrat:
Thumbs up for safety: Belleville students pledge not to text while driving.
Belleville East High School students pledged Friday not to text on their cellular phones while driving.
The “X the TXT” program is sponsored by Allstate Insurance and hopes to increase safe driving among teens by preventing texting while driving.
Students agreed not to text while driving and received a thumb ring that says “TXTNG KILLS.”
Recent studies by the Allstate Foundation and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute determined that talking on cell phones, texting and instant messaging all cause distractions for teen drivers and increase the chance of an accident by 23 times over a person who is not using handheld phones or other devices.
Students were asked to pledge not to text and to give “a thumbs up to safer driving.”
