THE DAILY BREAD (Feb. 1)

Matt Chambers Wins the Battle of the Meteorologists: Scott Connell (Newschannel 5) and Matt Chambers (Channel 4) went head to head with snowfall predictions for this winter storm. Matt’s guess was closest to the total at Lambert Field (8.4”). Matt will be awarded a Cornbread prize package which may include a Cornbread T-shirt, a king’s scepter and a Chevy Tahoe floor mat. Congrats Matt!

We get the feeling Scott Connell really wanted to win this thing. He must have sent 10 e-mails with information on this storm. So here you have it: Scott Connell’s Nuggets of Snow.

Scott Connell’s Nuggets of Snow
“Elsah, IL had 6” of snow and Grafton had 11.3” It’s only 4.24 miles from Elsah to Grafton! Snowbands and thundersnow make for some wild variations.”

“I haven’t driven in snow like I had to right after midnight since I was on the Maine turnpike in 1990. It was that bad!”

“The weather service in Weldon Spring had 3” of snow in 1 hour around midnight. It just doesn’t get any heavier than that in this part of the country.”

“The total liquid equivalent was .62” and using the standard 10 to one conversion of snow to liquid, it would have been 6.2”, but it was more like a 13 to one ratio.” Translation: the snow was fluffier than normal and if it had been more wet, he would have won.

“The heaviest snow band slipped 20-30 miles farther north than I expected.”

“Congrats to Matt Chambers. He’s a nice guy”
