BRAD PAISLEY and CARRIE UNDERWOOD hosted the show and took a light hearted approach from the start. They sang parodies of the Beverly Hillbillies theme and I’ve Got A Tiger By The Tail to call attention to the year in Nashville, the oil spills in the Gulf Coast as well as the Tiger Woods scandal.
… LADY ANTEBELLUM’s win for Single of the Year was their second in the category. The trio won the award in 2009 for I Run To You.
DARIUS RUCKER presented the Top New Artist award to the ZAC BROWN BAND. Darius took the award in 2009.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD’s commercial for Ole makeup and facial cleansers made its debut during the ABC telecast of the CMA Awards.
One of CARRIE UNDERWOOD’s dresses broke before her final dress rehearsal so she had to hold it together on stage.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD must’ve been nervous. She was doing quite a bit of nail-biting during rehearsals. Maybe she was nervous about a possible Janet Jackson-like wardrobe malfunction during the live telecast!
JASON ALDEAN was joined by Kelly Clarkson on Don’t You Want To Stay Here A Little While.
MAC MCANALLY’s win for Musician of the Year was his third in a row.
SUGARLAND’s win for Vocal Duo was their fourth win in the category. They’ve now taken the honor back through 2007. BROOKS & DUNN were the last act to take the honor and they held the trophy from 2001-2006.
… In fact, the award has been held for multiple years very often since 1988. THE JUDDS held the honor from 1988-1991, then BROOKS & DUNN held it from 1992-1999, MONTGOMERY GENTRY took Vocal Duo for one year in 2000, then B&D re-claimed it from 2001-2006. Now SUGARLAND’s held it the last four years.
… BLAKE SHELTON’s win for Top Male Vocalist ended BRAD PAISLEY’s streak of three years winning the category. Brad held the honor from 2007-2009 with KEITH URBAN taking the prize in 2006.
MIRANDA LAMBERT and Sheryl Crow saluted LORETTA LYNN with a performance of Coal Miner’s Daughter and were joined by Loretta during the song.
MIRANDA LAMBERT was presented with the Female Vocalist award by LORETTA LYNN. TAYLOR SWIFT won the honor last year.
TAYLOR SWIFT gave a nice performance of her song Back to December but the most remarkable thing about it was her apparent confusion at the end when she mouthed “what?” to someone or something.
An emotional BRAD PAISLEY accepted the Entertainer of the Year award thanking many, but notably thanking country fans for being the most loyal — not just his fans, but all country fans.
Of all the nominees for Entertainer of the Year, only KEITH URBAN had previously won the award, taking the honor in 2005.
BLAKE SHELTON got yelled at by the CMA Awards staff for being too talky with all the fans inside the Bridgestone Arena who were there to rehearse with him for his performance tonight.
Nashville was impressed enough with Gwyneth Paltrow’s performance of Country Strong to give her a standing ovation. Despite her nervous performance, her efforts to become a true singer and guitarist came through. VINCE GILL was her sidekick.
