Today is the day that Stan Musial received The Presidential Medal Of Freedom from President Obama. This is an Honor that Stan Deserves. Stan is a 6 ft., 175 lbs. man that played baseball 22 years for our St. Louis Cardinals. He wore the uniform with pride and has been a shining Light and Example for the City of St. Louis and the Cardinals. Stan has a lifetime batting average of 331. He had 3,630 Hits, 475 Homeruns and 1,951 Runs batted In. Stan was the first player in baseball to earn $100,000 dollars a year in 1958 and 1959. I remember as a kid watching Stan play for the Cardinals. I remember his last game going 2 for 3 and ending his career as a true pro. Stan was never kicked out of any baseball game. He is a Hall of Famer and played the game the way the game should be played.
I always wanted to meet Stan, and a number of years ago while playing in a golf event with WIL at The Missouri Bluffs my wish came true. As I was walking toward my golf cart I saw a man approaching me and as he got closer I said to myself that is Stan Musial. As he approached I held out my hand and said Stan Musial, and he replied yes, I told him what an honor it was to meet him. He smiled and thanked me. He then told me to have good round. That is a day I will never forget. That day I shook hands with a Great American who today received The Presidential Medal Of Freedom.
