You are in the middle of some kind of project around the house -- mowing the lawn, putting in a new fence, painting the living room, or whatever. You are hot and sweaty, covered in dirt or paint. You have your old work clothes, T-shirt with a stain from who knows what, and an old pair of tennis shoes. Right in the middle of this great home improvement project you realize you need to run to Home Depot to get something to help complete the job. Depending on your age you might do the
following:

In your 20’s
Stop what you are doing. Shave, take a shower, blow dry your hair, brush your teeth, floss, and put on clean clothes. Check yourself in the mirror and flex. Add a dab of your favorite cologne because you never know, you just might meet some hot chick while standing in the checkout lane. And you went to school with the pretty girl running the register.

In your 30’s
Stop what you are doing, put on clean shorts and shirt. Change shoes. You married the hot chick so no need for much else. Wash your hands and comb your hair. Check yourself in the mirror. Still got it. Add a shot of your favorite cologne to cover the smell. The cute girl running the register is the kid sister to someone you went to school with.

In your 40’s
Stop what you are doing. Put on a sweatshirt that is long enough to cover the hole in the crotch of your shorts. Put on different shoes and a hat. Wash your hands. Your bottle of Brut Cologne is almost empty so you don’t want to waste any of it on a trip to Home Depot. Check yourself in the mirror and do more sucking in than flexing. The spicy young thing running the register is your daughter’s age and you feel weird thinking she is spicy.

In your 50’s
Stop what you are doing. Put a hat on, wipe the dirt off your hands onto your shirt. Change shoes because you don’t want to get dog doo in your new sports car. Check yourself in the mirror and you swear not to wear that shirt anymore because it makes you look fat. The cutie running the register smiles when she sees you coming and you think you still have it. Then you remember the hat you have on is from Buddy’s Bait & Beer Bar and it says, ‘I Got Worms’.

In your 60’s
Stop what you are doing. No need for a hat anymore. Hose the dog doo off your shoes. The mirror was shattered when you were in your 50’s. You hope you have underwear on so nothing hangs out the hole in your pants. The girl running the register may be cute, but you don’t have your glasses on so you are not sure.

In your 70’s
Stop what you are doing. Wait to go to Home Depot until the drug store has your prescriptions ready, too. Don’t even notice the dog doo on your shoes. The young thing at the register smiles at you because you remind her of her grandfather.

In your 80’s
Stop what you are doing. Start again. Then stop again. Now you remember you needed to go to Home Depot. Go to Walmart instead and wander around trying to think what it is you are looking for. Fart out loud and you think someone called out your name. You went to school with the old lady who greeted you at the front door.

<![CDATA[Video of the Brad Paisley fall.]]> 40530 Mon, 08 Mar 2010 17:45:36 -0700

Ouch. Country singer Brad Paisley took a nasty tumble at the finale of his American Saturday Night tour in Charleston, S.C. over the weekend. He was at the end of performing his encore finale, Alcohol, when he tripped on stage and fell, slamming into the stage set. He got up and waved goodbye to the crowd, then went backstage and was promptly taken to a local hospital by ambulance. "Man, am I sore today," he wrote on Twitter yesterday

<![CDATA[SURPRISING EFFECTS OF THE CHILE EARTHQUAKE]]> 40127 Fri, 05 Mar 2010 17:07:30 -0700 Some less-discussed and rather odd consequences of the 8.8 magnitude temblor:

1. Our days on planet Earth will be shorter
The magnitude of the quake was so great it actually tilted the planetary axis — as a result, the world will spin infinitesimally faster and our days will be shorter by 1.26 millionths of a second. "It's interesting," says seismologist David Kerridge in the Wall Street Journal, even if "it has no particular consequence on anything."

2. Volcanoes may become rather common
Chile's earthquake is likely to prompt a "legacy of volcanic explosions," says Kate Ravilious in the New Scientist. Large quakes have historically acted to "resurrect previously inactive volcanoes" and make "active ones" more likely to erupt.

3. Chilean wine just got more rare
Reports from Chile's wine region paint a disastrous picture of "wine casks destroyed; huge vats cracked, their wine spilling out; ruined equipment." One vintner laments that the quake is "a double whammy" — it hit right at harvest time, meaning much of this season's crop will likely rot in the fields.

4. Printer paper may get pricier
Chile is one of the world's largest wood pulp producers and most mills in the country "have been shuttered owing to damage and power outages." Consequently, global paper prices could leap to $40 a ton — a roughly 5 percent bounce — according to analysts' estimates.

5. Virginians may sense a certain dryness
Water levels in a monitoring well in Christiansburg, Va., dropped two feet as a result of Saturday's quake, reports the Baltimore Sun. The only explanation: The site is "well known" for its sensitivity to "seismic waves."

<![CDATA[YOUR CAR COLOR]]> 39994 Thu, 04 Mar 2010 17:25:13 -0700

The British Royal Automobile Club came up with a list of what a car's color says about it's owner. Here is what your vehicle is telling people about you..

  • BLACK: You're ambitious and status seeking.
  • GREEN: You're very traditional and an elitist.
  • BLUE: You're a team player and very sociable.
  • WHITE: You're aloof, dutiful and methodical.
  • GRAY: You're understated and cautious.
  • SILVER: You have a sense of style, but you can be pompous at times.
  • RED: You're outgoing, impulsive and easily bored.

<![CDATA[FIVE THINGS WHICH CAN IMPROVE HAPPINESS]]> 39855 Wed, 03 Mar 2010 17:21:02 -0700

1. Be grateful - Some study participants were asked to write letters of gratitude to people who had helped them in some way. The study found that these people reported a lasting increase in happiness - over weeks and even months - after implementing the habit. What's even more surprising: Sending the letter is not necessary. Even when people wrote letters but never delivered them to the addressee, they still reported feeling better afterwards.

2. Be optimistic - Another practice that seems to help is optimistic thinking. Study participants were asked to visualize an ideal future - for example, living with a loving and supportive partner, or finding a job that was fulfilling - and describe the image in a journal entry. After doing this for a few weeks, these people too reported increased feelings of well-being.

3. Count your blessings - People who practice writing down three good things that have happened to them every week show significant boosts in happiness, studies have found. It seems the act of focusing on the positive helps people remember reasons to be glad.

4. Use your strengths - Another study asked people to identify their greatest strengths, and then to try to use these strengths in new ways. For example, someone who says they have a good sense of humor could try telling jokes to lighten up business meetings or cheer up sad friends. This habit, too, seems to heighten happiness.

5. Commit acts of kindness - It turns out helping others also helps ourselves. People who donate time or money to charity, or who altruistically assist people in need, report improvements in their own happiness.
Lyubomirsky has also created an iPhone application, called Live Happy, to help people boost their well-being.

Hi, my name is Darla and my ID number is A478027!

I am a sweet 5-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat with a tuxedo-style black and white coat. I am a good little girl who is litterbox trained and I like to keep my pen tidy. I came to the Humane Society of Missouri as a stray and was suffering from severe ear mites. I have since been cured and I won't face any lasting medical problems as a result but my ears are scarred from the mites. The staff and volunteers call me "the ultimate lap cat" because I love nothing better than being close to people. I'll let you know when I'm content and happy because I have a gentle. lulling purr. I would love a home to share with adults, children, other cats and I'll even befriend a canine! I'm an all-around great girl, waiting for you to take me home. Come meet me today!

<![CDATA[THE HAPPIEST/UNHAPPIEST CITIES IN THE U.S.]]> 37869 Wed, 17 Feb 2010 17:33:41 -0700
If you're unhappy where you are, you can pick up and move. Thanks to a new study, we now know where all those happy people live. A survey (Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index) asked more than 353,000 Americans to find out the happiest -- and the unhappiest cities in the United States. Residents of large cities — those with a population of 1 million or more — generally report higher levels of well-being and more optimism about the future than those in small or medium-sized cities. In small cities, at 250,000 or less, people are more likely to feel safe walking alone at night and have enough money for housing.

... Overall, the top 10 cities include four in California, two in Utah and one each in Colorado and Hawaii. Of them, only the Holland, Mich., and Washington, D.C., metro areas are located in the Eastern or Central time zones.

... Many of the bottom 10 are in economically embattled regions. Three are in the Alleghenies and three in the Rust Belt. Only Shreveport, La., and Modesto, Calif., are west of the Mississippi.

The 10 happiest cities are:

    1. Boulder, CO
    2. Holland-Grand Haven, MI
    3. Honolulu, HI
    4. Provo-Orem, UT
    5. Santa Rosa-Petaluma, CA

    8. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV
    9. Ogden-Clearfield, UT
    10. Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, CA

... The 10 unhappiest cities are:

    <![CDATA[VALENTINE'S DAY MYTHS FOR MEN]]> 37012 Thu, 11 Feb 2010 14:05:53 -0700

    MYTH #1 - It's OK to skip Valentine's Day.
Ahhhh...no. She might realize it's a hyped up holiday, but that won't get you off the hook. She'll see her friends going on dates and getting flowers and YOU will be in the doghouse.

MYTH #2 - You have to celebrate on February 14.
No. No one says you have to celebrate on the same day as everyone else. Instead, pick a day to plan your date and declare that day your own personal Valentine's Day. Places will be less crowded and she may enjoy mixing it up a bit.

MYTH #3 - You're trying to save money and she knows it, so it's OK to skip Valentine's Day.
Again...no. Don't plan an expensive date, but do surprise her with an inexpensive but thoughtful activity. This is a great opportunity to earn brownie points.

MYTH #4 - You've only been dating a few months, so it's not necessary to celebrate.
False. You can't ignore it, and you'll royally screw it up if you do. Instead, don't plan anything romantic, think of a fun activity. Anything to get you laughing. And a funny card and inexpensive bouquet will go miles.

MYTH #5 - You must do dinner on Valentine's Day.
Why not mix it up? Try a couple's massage, look for an old fashioned roller skating rink in your city, or go to a jazz show instead. Dinner is okay, and you can't go wrong with it, but it's a bit unoriginal.

MYTH #6 - You need to spend loads of money on a gift.
This is sooooo false. It's the thought that really counts the most on Valentine's Day. Get her a small gift with lots of meaning. If you're starting to get serious, buy her a robe to keep at your place.

Hi, my name is Starburst and my ID number is A461920!

I am 1-year, 9-month Labrador Retriever mix with a short tan and white coat. I came to the Humane Society of Missouri in May 2009 as a stray. Since I have been here the staff and volunteer have learned that I am very smart girl so they have been working on my training skills. I already know how to sit, lie down and we are working on stay. I walk nicely on a leash especially when I'm wearing my blue harness. In my free time, I love to play, chasing balls and enjoying rounds of fetch. I also enjoy lounging on my bed especially while enjoying a bone or other treat. I am hoping for a home to share with adults and children alike. I will be most comfortable in a home where I am the only dog. My friendly and outgoing personality is infections - I'm sure to put a smile on your face. I'm a great girl who has been patiently waiting for 9 long months for a forever home. Won't you be my Valentine?
