Number 5 Is Pretty Good

Well, Phat Albert is at it again! With Thursday’s demonstration of power the Cardinal first baseman continued to put himself head and shoulders above everyone else in the ‘national past-time’. Pujols homered twice, drove in three runs and scored four times. Already Pujols has set records for the most times over 100 RBI’s, over 30 homers and batting over .300 at the beginning of a career.

We don’t believe that Albert will play the whole season like he has played the first tenth of the campaign, but if he did, he would finish with 60 homeruns, 210 RBIs and 180 runs scored. That would amount to the greatest offensive season by any player in the history of the game!

As great as that is, Albert’s teammates and the kids that benefit from his charitable work say he’s a better teammate, friend and supporter than he is a ballplayer. Amazing! Add it all up and Pujols is truly one of the great St. Louis treasures. While the economy is failing, AB belongs in Belgium and we regularly hear of public figures compromising their values and cheating the populace, Albert is the real deal.

I’ve included some audio with this blog from Tony La Russa, Skip Schumaker and Albert himself. Tony calls ‘number 5′ a perfect player. Schumaker calls him the best player he will ever play with and Albert simply says he attempts to trust God, love his family and concentrate on hitting.

Thanks Albert, we need to know there are still some genuine articles for us to see.

Do Good.

Cardinal Opener – Happy Holidays!

Cardinal openers are the best! Even in this cold, awful weather coming to the ball park for the opening day festivities is one of my favorite things! The fans are pumped, the food tastes better, the music is sweeter and even the sports writers are in a good mood. It’s amazing!

The Cardinals should be decent this year and St. Louis is the host city for the All-Star game! Keep your fingers crossed and I’ll be able to bring you all kinds of interviews from the mega stars coming to the Gateway City!

In keeping with tradition, the Cardinals trotted out their players in fancy cars, played the Budweiser theme song while they introduced TLR and his troops and all was right with the world! Then the game started. Would Adam Wainwright be strong? Would Chris Duncan be able to hit again? Will Albert Pujols dominate the league once again?

The Cardinals jumped out in front with some clutch hitting by newcomer Khalil Greene and Ryan Ludwick and some decent pitching by Wainwright. But it just wasn’t to be.

The team’s biggest problem in 2008 was the bullpen and it was again on opening day. The relievers blew two different leads and the Birds were six to four losers.

Adam Wainwright is ever the professional and took the blame for not pitching deeper into the game. To listen to three different comments by the Redbird hurler, click on the icons above. The Cardinals will be OK this season, but somebody has to step up and the be stopper in the pen.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame!

The Cardinals home opener is scheduled for tomorrow…it’s gonna be a cold on weather-wise, but the hot eats at the stadium will warm you up.

In one year, the stadium plans to sell 540,000 hotdogs, 181,000 pounds o nacho chips and 32,000 gallons of nacho cheese. (no figures where given concerning jalopenos.)

New this year is a “taste of the ballpark” package that includes a scaled down hot dog, pretzel, peanuts, dipping sauce and cookies for $12….$5 off the price if the items were sold separately. You can also get a “cardinals’ combo meal” with a hotdog or cheeseurger, fries and soda and a souvenier cap for $20 or $22.

Albert Pujols Earns NL MVP Award – Commemorate the Occasion!

Albert Pujols has earned the second National League Most Valuable Player award of his prestigious career.

The first baseman, who hit .357 with 37 homers and 116 RBI, was announced as the winner yesterday.

Helping us celebrate the occasion is The Highland Mint, which has produced a fully-licensed Photomint commemorating Pujols’ 2008 N.L. MVP award. This limited-edition keepsake features a 5-inch by 7-inch color action photograph of Pujols, a Cardinals logo, the wording 2008 National League MVP Award Winner and a 24kt gold-plated Cardinals team coin.

Double-matted in Cardinals colors and protected underneath a glass panel, each Photomint includes an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity. This Photomint is presented in a 10-inch by 12-inch black frame that comes ready to hang when you receive it.

A built-in easel also allows for desktop or mantle display. Limited to 2,008 pieces, each Albert Pujols 2008 N.L. MVP Award Photomint is priced at $49.95.

I Got My Mojo Back

It only took eating an entire 16″ Fortels Mojo pizza pie to do it, but my Mojo (and the Cardinals Mojo) has been restored.

I didn’t do the Buzz Cut for the Cards, but I am the only person who was willing to eat an entire Mojo pie. Have you seen how much meat is on that thing?

It was good…at least the first 10 pieces. It should be at least a year before I need more Mojo.

The Cardinal Train is Coming…with Izzy, Mabry & The Mad Hungarian. GO CARDS!

I almost called into today with the “redbird flu.” Today is one of my favorite

days of the year – OPENING DAY. GO CARDS!

My Cardinals Opening Day ritual is to take the day off work, sleep in (gotta rest up) and head down to Al Hrabosky’s for the pre-game festivities.

Opening Day should be a national holiday. Can’t we have our own “St. Louis” holidays? I would give up MLK and Presidents Day to make Opening Day a paid vacation day. (Oh yeah, I don’t get those days off anyway.)

This year, I spent my opening day morning in the studio. It was great, because with all the interviews – Izzy, Al Hraboksy, Mabry and Heidi Glaus reporting for us from Busch Stadium – it really put me in the mood.

Click tab above to listen to Izzy’s call.

Cornbread even pulled from the vault the historic Pujols interview from spring training 2 years ago. What a soundbyte!

What are your opening day rituals?
